Coffee for dry eyes - maybe

A small Japanese study published online in the journal, Ophthalmolog, claims that caffeine intake can boost the very important ability of making tears, which would be a great boon, if true, for the many people, especially seniors who suffer from dry eye syndrome, namely the inability to produce tears, which not only leads to uncomfortable symptoms such as pain and irritation, but which may also, in severe cases, lead to vision loss.

In this double-blind placebo-controlled study, however, people who were given caffeine capsules (and not real coffee, alas) had significantly improved production of tears compared to the placebo-takers.

Would real java do the same?

Well, clearly no one knows, but if you have dry eye syndrome, it might be worth a try.

At the very worst, you get an extra few good cups of coffee into you.
